Park officials have identified the remains of a man found in the Smokies on July 8, 2019, but are still investigating how he died.

Authorities say the man found in the park is David J. Carver, 64, of Blount County, Tennessee.

Carver's remains were found in an off-trail area near Laurel Creek Road between Townsend, Tennessee and Cades Cove.

Park officials say the cause of death and "activity at time of death" are under still investigation.

The Knox Country Regional Forensic Center identified Carver through comparing medical records.

An autopsy is being performed.
