The Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office is taking steps to help keep gun owners and their families safe. Right now, the department is offering free gun locks.
The locks are available at two locations -- the sheriff’s office on the fourth floor of the county courthouse in downtown Asheville and the the Sgt. Jeff Hewitt Satellite Office, 339 New Leicester Highway.
Sgt. Kelli Tinsley said the giveaway is part of an initiative to keep families, especially children, safe.
"We have officers that go into houses and they notice that there are unsecured weapons that children can get a hold of, and this is a way for us to help the owners make sure they meet their responsibilities as gun owners," Tinsley said.
The locks, which fit all types of firearms, are provided to the sheriff's office free of charge through Project ChildSafe. They will be offered first come, first served until the sheriff's office run out of the 200 locks it has available.
