North Carolina Highway Patrol Troopers continue their investigation into a fatal crash Monday afternoon that involved a Madison County woman and a tractor-trailer.

Authorities have identified the woman who was killed as Laurie Allison Fraser, 53, of Madison County.

The crash happened on Highway 213, between Marshall and Mars Hill, at about 4:30 p.m.

Troopers say a car traveling east on N.C. 213 collided with a tractor-trailer that was slowing down to merge into a turn lane. The car hit the tractor-trailer from behind and rolled multiple times before coming to rest, about 400 feet down the hill from the collision.

Fraser was thrown from her vehicle. At this time, authorities say it is unclear if she was wearing a seatbelt.

People who live near the area said it was one of the worst crashes they have seen in a long time.

"We're just praying for them," said Harvie Coates, who lives in the area. "It's all you can do now."

Troopers are still investigating the cause of the crash.
