A Buncombe County school media coordinator used an online crowdfunding effort to provide hands-on activities that kids and their families can do at home.
Leicester Elementary School students can now check out education games online.
Caryn Levy set up an innovative service called the Library of Things. One of the goals is to get STEM activities into the hands of students. The items do not use batteries or electronics.
Students can participate in games and projects at home that promote problem solving, movement, coordination and family interaction.
"In the school library, it's not all about checking out books. It's also finding items to work with at home. It gets them speaking and working together and listening to each other and working together," Levy said.
Once the items are returned to the school, they will be cleaned and quarantined before the pieces are sent home with another family.
Levy said she got help from the media specialist at North Buncombe High School as well as the music and physical education teachers at Leicester Elementary.
