If you're looking for a delicious blast from the past in the middle of downtown Asheville, look no further than the Soda Fountain at Woolworth Walk.
The Soda Fountain marries two of Asheville's favorite passions -- art and food!
Woolworth Walk is housed in a historic building that used to be a Woolworth five-and-dime store. It's now an art gallery that features more than 170 artists.
The Soda Fountain, found alongside the works of art, was restored to its original location in 2001.
"When we finally got it created and ready to open, we just hung a sign up and hoped for the best," Woolworth Walk owner Scott Sirkin said.
Since then, Sirkin says The Soda Fountain has likely become one of Asheville's most photographed spots. But it's not just popular with tourists.
"We have a lot of regulars - people that just, like, work downtown that love the food and eat it every single day," manager Nikki McClure said.
The decor isn't the only thing that will have you waxing nostalgic. The menu includes items that were offered back in the '50s.
"Sandwiches, BLTs, fried bolognas, a lot of the original menu is still here," McClure said. "Milkshakes, malts, sundaes, banana splits -- all of that."
There's something for everyone -- for the young or the young at heart.
"I've had people come in and say, 'I used to work here behind the counter that you're working at'," McClure recalled.
No matter your age, it's easy to see why The Soda Fountain at Woolworth Walk is worth the walk.
