The personal information of some Haywood County families may have been compromised in a cyber attack on the school district last year.

The Haywood County Schools system was hit with a Ransomware attack in August 2020. After discovering the attack, officials took services offline to contain the attack, activated key partners to investigate and respond and contacted North Carolina Department of Public Safety. Experts all the way up to the National Guard worked to repair the school district's computers.

Investigators later discovered the hackers may have gotten access to some families' personal information.

On Jan. 5, school officials mailed letters to those whose information may have been compromised.
