A fire overnight in downtown Swannanoa destroys a building that was slated for demolitian.

The fire broke out around 10:30 p.m. Sunday night in the 2200 block of US-70, near the Ingles grocery store.

The structure that burned was a garage building. It was detached from an old house that has been used for several different businesses.

The fire chief says the structure was scheduled to be torn down in the near future to make room for a new apartment building.

Four fire departments battled the blaze.

The chief was concerned that wind would spread the flames to other structures.

"When we got here the wind was blowing the flames horizontally across the structure, so we just did an exterior attack," said Swannanoa Fire Chief Anthony Penland.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
