An Asheville Charter School is one step closer to becoming a reality. The plans for Peak Academy were approved by the Charter School Advisory Board on Monday. The school has a planned start date for fall 2021. It would serve 400 students. Officials expect the school will get final approval from the state in March.

Charities in Brevard are worried they may have to cut programs as Transylvania County's United Way announces it's shutting down. Staff from the United Way cited a changing fundraising climate and more competition that forced the long-standing non-profit to announce it was shutting. Six area non-profit directors said they are faced with significant funding gaps.

UNC Charlotte is organizing a remembrance concert in honor of Waynesville native Riley Howell and Reed Parlier. The two students were killed during a campus shooting last April 30th. The concert will be held on the first anniversary of the shooting in the Belk Theater. It will feature the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra and other performances.
