Beyond the Scoreboard: Finalists for Division I Female Athlete in Major Sport

In advance of the 57th WNC Sports Awards Banquet sponsored by Ingles, will honor each of the 122 WNC high-school athletes and teams chosen as finalists.

Today’s honorees are included in the award for the Jan & Lary Schulhof Division I Female Athlete in a Major Sport.

Lary Schulhof is a board member of the Mountain Amateur Athletic Club, which conducts the banquet. He is an Olympic gold medalist in swimming.

The finalists include Kloyee Anderson, Enka softball and volleyball; Eden Hawkins, Hendersonville soccer; Abby Krueger, Roberson volleyball; Anna Morgan, Smoky Mountain soccer; Pali Smith, Reynolds; Aleshia Tisho, Smoky Mountain basketball.

** Kloyee Anderson of Enka has been her conference’s Player of the Year three times in two different sports.

She has been the Mountain Athletic Conference Player of the Year each of the past two seasons in softball after hitting .544 as a sophomore and .620 as a junior.

She was co-player of the year in volleyball this season after piling up 300 digs, 255 kills and 25 blocks.

She has signed to play softball at Alabama.

** As a sophomore, Hendersonville soccer player Eden Hawkins was the Western Highlands Conference Player of the Year last spring.

A two-time all-conference performer, she scored 44 goals and added 24 assists to lead the Bearcats to a 21-2 record.

Hawkins is also a two-time academic all-conference selection with a 4.3 grade-point average.

** Roberson’s Abby Krueger was the Western Mountain Athletic Conference Co-Player of the Year in volleyball.

She was also the all-area Player of the Year after a season in which she had 319 kills, 263 digs and 33 blocks.

Krueger has a 4.71 grade-point average and will play volleyball at Wake Forest.

** Anna Morgan had an incredible season to remember as a freshman on the Smoky Mountain soccer team.

She tied a WNC all-time record by scoring 51 goals.

She was named all-area Player of the Year and the Western North Carolina Athletic Conference Player of the Year.

** Pali Smith of Reynolds soccer was the Mountain Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year.

Smith finished last spring with 28 goals and 11 assists.

She was an all-area, all-region and all-state selection and has signed to play at Lees McRae College.

** Aleshia Tisho was the Mountain Six Conference Player of the Year for Smoky Mountain basketball.

She is a two-time all-conference selection in basketball and also accomplished as a distance runner in cross country and track, earning all-state honors in track.

Tisho has a 4.375 grade-point average.

The 57th WNC Sports Award Banquet is set for May 6 at Omni Grove Park Inn. Tickets can be purchased at Omni Grove Park Inn.
