Beyond the Scoreboard: Finalists for the Blue Ridge X-Ray Female Athlete Academic Award

In advance of the 57th WNC Sports Awards Banquet sponsored by Ingles, will honor each of the 124 WNC high-school athletes and teams chosen as finalists.

Today’s honorees are finalists for the Blue Ridge X-Ray Female Student Athlete Academic Award.

Finalists include Emma Binns, Roberson volleyball; Anna Newnam, Roberson swimming and diving; Shelby Wolfe, Cherokee basketball and Katelyn Jones, Murphy football and soccer.

** Roberson volleyball standout Emma Binns is an AAU Academic All-American with a 5.00 grade-point average.

She is a two-time Citizen-Times All-Western selection and named all-conference all four seasons.

Binns had 180 kills this season and over 1,000 digs for her career.

She will play volleyball at University of Tennessee.

** Katelyn Jones plays football and track at Murphy High and is Salutatorian of her senior class.

She was a Junior Marshall and won the Danforth Leadership Award.

Jones finished second in the state among 1A schools in extra points in football and was named to the East-West All-Star Game.

She was the Bulldogs’ MVP in soccer after setting a school record with 38 goals.

** Anna Newnam of Roberson is ranked No. 1 in her senior class with a 5.33 grade-point average.

She is a National Merit Scholarship Finalist and a member of the executive board of the National Honor Society.

She finished second, third, fourth and fifth in four events at the state swimming meet.

Newnam was named MVP of the Buncombe County meet and was county champion in four events.

**Shelby Wolfe plays three sports at Cherokee High and is a member of the National Honor Society with a 4.25 grade-point average.

She is taking three college credit classes and won the Outstanding Academic Achievement Award.

Wolfe is two-time all-conference basketball player with career totals of more than 900 points and is the school record holder in two track events – at 100 meters and 300-meter hurdles.

She has signed to play basketball at Gardner-Webb.
