Beyond the Scoreboard: Pisgah remains atop WNC/WLOS.com Top 10 Poll

The only two losses Friday night from last week’s WNC/WLOS.com Top 10 Football Poll teams came against other ranked teams, as No. 1 Pisgah toppled No. 10 Tuscola 20-10 and No. 5 Hendersonville outscored No. 6 Asheville High 49-38.

1. Pisgah (3-0)

After beating Tuscola for a sixth straight season, the Bears still have two non-conference games remaining before starting the chase for a Mountain Six conference title.

2. Reynolds (2-1)

After blowing out Owen, the Rockets put their winning streaks of 34 straight against WNC opponents and 26 in a row vs. conference foes on the line this week in their Western Mountain Athletic Conference opener.

3. Murphy (2-1)

After collecting career win No. 395 for coach David Gentry with a win over Central Davidson, the Bulldogs play back-to-back games at home against out-of-state opponents before beginning defense of their Smoky Mountain Conference title.

4. Erwin (2-0)

After enjoying the week off, quarterback Kendrick Weaver insists the Warriors will treat their Western Mountain Athletic Conference opener just like any other game, but the stakes are higher than that.

5. Hendersonville 3-0

The Bearcats showed off their explosive offense by outscoring Asheville High 49-38, with Kalin Ensley scoring four first-half touchdowns.

The Greenies bounced back from the loss of leading rusher Sidney Gibbs to a broken leg with a 34-7 rout of Cannon School.

The Panthers bounced back from a loss at Murphy to get back on the winning track against Rabun Gap, Ga.

After taking the week off, the Cougars resume non-conference play with games the next two weeks against Smoky Mountain Conference opponents.

A 26-24 win at North Buncombe kept the Mustangs perfect under new coach Rickey Brindley.

The Cougars got five touchdown passes from Three Hillier, but the defense couldn’t handle Hendersonville. The D committed more than a dozen penalties and were flagged for offsides eight times.
