Longtime Tuscola High assistant coach J.T. Postell was named head football coach at Tuscola High Monday in a unanimous vote by the Haywood County Board of Education.
Also on Monday night, Avery County hired former Enka High coach Mac Bryan to direct the Vikings’ program.
Postell is the son of prominent former coach Terry Postell, who won a state title at Murphy and had an 18-year record of 112-77-1 at Murphy and Andrews.
J.T. Postell has been an assistant at Tuscola for the past 11 seasons. He will be the program’s fourth coach in the past eight seasons.
He succeeds Tommy Pursley, who posted a 30-19 record in four seasons, including a 7-5 mark in 2017. This will be the first head coaching job for Postell, who played for former Tuscola coach Donnie Kiefer at Andrews and also played at Western Carolina.
His father Terry played on a state championship team at Andrews and coached Murphy to the 1974 state 2A title.
At Avery, Bryan replaces Jason Phelps, who struggled to a 6-29 record in four seasons with the program, including a 2-9 mark in 2017.
Bryan resigned as head coach at Ooltewah (Tenn.) High to take the job with the Vikings, citing a desire to be closer to his family. He was 45-16 in five seasons with Ooltewah, leading the program to the playoffs in all five seasons.
A former head coach at Pikeville (Ky.) College, Bryan spent the 2009 season as head coach at Enka. He led the Jets to a 4-7 season, their most wins since 2002, but left after one year to become an assistant coach at UT-Martin.
