WNC’s Top Football Performances: Playoffs Week 1

The 17 WNC schools that opened the playoffs Friday night posted a 9-8 record, and those nine schools plus Cherokee High and Mitchell (first-round byes) advance to play on Nov. 17.

Some of the top performances include:


Alex Flinn, Reynolds

The Rockets’ junior quarterback’s incredible season continued in a 52-6 romp over Parkland. Flinn completed 31 of 42 passes for 347 yards and six touchdowns, adding to his 12-game totals that include 2,996 yards passing and 38 TDs.

Bryson Patton (5 receptions, 93 yards) had three scores, while Nathan St. Onge (11-95) and I’dre Bell (9-53) added one touchdown reception each.

Trey Robinson, Mountain Heritage

WNC’s all-time leader in total yardage, rushing and TD responsibility added to those numbers in a 50-28 win over Lexington Senior.

The senior quarterback ran 29 times for 223 yards and four scores, while backfield mate Dathan Robinson added 159 yards rushing and three TDs.

Trey Robinson’s career numbers include 12,090 total yards, 7,800 rushing yards and 154 combined TDs - rushing (97) and passing (57).

Alex Williford, Hendersonville

The Bearcats’ senior quarterback threw for four touchdowns in a 49-0 win over Brevard. He connected with Tykel Landrum on scores of 8 and 20 yards, Nasir Artis on an 8-yard TD and Kalin Ensley on a 40-yard score. Ensley also scored on a 97-yard interception return.

Brodie Bowman, Swain County

The Maroon Devils’ quarterback led his team to 42 first-half points in a 42-14 win over Cherryville. Bowman completed 4 of 6 passes for 188 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 52 yards and another score.

Brock Kloeppel, Franklin

The Panthers’ senior running back rushed for 169 yards and three scores in a 52-27 win over Smoky Mountain. He reached the end zone on runs of 5, 8 and 14 yards.

Rylee Anderson, Robbinsville

The Black Knights’ sophomore running back compiled 182 yards on 15 carries and scored three TDs in a 57-16 win over Rosman. Anderson had touchdown runs of 4, 5 and 6 yards, and teammate Ian Wiggins (6-94) ran in scores of 25 and 22 yards.



The Rockets continue to bludgeon opponents. A 52-6 win over Parkland marked the 18th straight time over two years a Reynolds win came by double digits. The average margin of victory in that span is 38 points.


A 49-0 win over Brevard was the Bearcats’ fifth straight win. In that streak the offense is averaging 45 points a game, while the defense has allowed just one touchdown in the past three games, with two shutouts of Brevard.


The Black Knights outgained Rosman 526-176 and scored the first 44 points in a 57-16 waltz over Rosman. The victory was the program’s 10th in postseason play since 2014.


Pounding out 324 yards on the ground, the Panthers won their 12th straight game with a 52-27 win over Smoky Mountain. The Panthers went over the 3,000-yard rushing mark on the season (3,152) and increased their per-game average to 286 yards on the ground.
