In advance of the 57th WNC Sports Awards Banquet sponsored by Ingles, WLOS.com will honor each of the 122 WNC high-school athletes and teams chosen as finalists.
Today’s honorees are included in the award for the EmergeOrtho Blue Ridge Division II Male Team in an Olympic Sport.
The finalists include Asheville School swimming; Christ School lacrosse and Robbinsville wrestling.
** The Asheville School swimming team went undefeated in the regular season and won its 11th straight Carolinas Athletic Association team title.
Coach Frank Kriegler’s Blues finished third in the state meet and had six all-conference swimmers – Nathan Alleyne, Michael Chang, Joseph Delaloye, Connor Smith, Tristan Thompson and Crow Thorsen.
Top finishers at the state meet included Alleyne placing second in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle, and Smith finishing third in the 200 freestyle.
** The Christ School lacrosse team finished with a 17-5 record and a NCISAA 3A state title last spring.
The Greenies were undefeated in conference play and outscored its postseason opponents 55-15 under veteran coach Jeff Miles, who won his first state title in his 16th season.
The players had a cumulative grade-point average of 3.8 and put in more than 500 hours of service to their community.
** Robbinsville’s always solid wrestling program put together another stellar season. Coach Todd Odom’s squad won the Smoky Mountain Conference dual team and tournament titles, was the Western Regional champion in the dual team division and finished third in the state tournament.
The Black Knights have had state finishes of first, second and two thirds in recent seasons.
Robbinsville had seven wrestlers qualify for the state meet, with two state champions, two runner-ups and two fourth-place finishers.
