Beyond the Scoreboard: Tourists lose season opener, 2-0 to Delmarva

The Asheville Tourists managed just six hits and struck out 14 times in a 2-0 loss to Delmarva in the South Atlantic League opener for both teams.

The Tourists got strong pitching from starter Antonio Santos (0-1) and relievers Ben Bowden and Mike Bunal. Santos allowed just four hits and two runs (one earned) in six innings while striking out four. Bowden and Bunal eached pitched a scoreless inning.

Asheville got two hits each from Chad Spanberger and Ramon Marcelino.

Delmarva starter Michael Baumann (1-0) struck out 10 and allowed just four hits in five innings. William Reed Hayes struck out two in the ninth to pick up a save.

The teams continue a four-game series with a meeting on Friday night.

Asheville’s home opener is April 12 vs. Columbus, the first Thirsty Thursday at McCormick Field.
