Don’t like to set the precedent and accept that it is unfair to an unbeaten and quality Franklin High program that has been No. 1 the past five weeks, but I’ve come to (slowly) realize that Reynolds deserves to be the top-ranked team in the mountains.

So a change at the top was made.

1. Reynolds (6-1, 4-0)

Are the Rockets of recent vintage the most dominant program in the history of WNC football? A 37-0 rollover at Tuscola in the “Thursday Night Lights” game on MY 40 was the Rockets’ 29th straight against WNC opponents. Reynolds has averaged 51 points a game during this incredible run.

Last week’s ranking – No. 3

Friday’s game – off week

2. Franklin (6-0)

A 54-0 romp over Carolina (S.C.) marks the fourth time in seven years the Panthers have started a season with at least six straight wins. Now a new challenge awaits as Mountain Six 2-A Conference action begins.

Last week’s ranking – No. 1

Friday’s game – at Hendersonville

3. Mountain Heritage (5-0)

Cougars enjoyed the week off as they prepare for the Western Highlands Conference opener, a rivalry showdown with the program they have shared the regular-season title with the past two seasons.

Last week’s ranking – No. 2

Friday’s Game – home vs. Mitchell.

4. Murphy (6-1, 2-0)

A 49-24 rout of Andrews stretched the Bulldogs’ record to 20-2 over the past two seasons, with both losses to Franklin. Coach David Gentry (386-190 overall, 330-115 in his 35th year at Murphy) has tied Maiden’s Tom Brown for the state record for most wins at one school.

Last week’s ranking – No. 4.

Friday’s game – home vs. Hayesville

5. Mitchell (6-0)

The Mountaineers are 27-2 in regular-season play the past three years. Both losses have come against this week’s opponent, the Western Highlands Conference opener for both squads.

Last week’s ranking – No. 5

Friday’s game –at Mountain Heritage

6. Christ School (5-0)

The Greenies stayed undefeated without stepping on the field, receiving a forfeit from a Victory Christian squad that reportedly didn’t have enough players available to field a team.

Last week’s ranking – No. 6

Friday’s Game –home vs. Rabun Gap (Ga.)

7. Brevard (5-1)

The Blue Devils return to action after an off week, riding a five-game winning streak as they begin Mountain Six 2-A Conference play.

Last week’s ranking – No. 8

Friday’s Game – home vs. East Henderson

8. Cherokee (6-0, 1-0)

The Braves are for real. Cherokee has only beaten Swain County nine times in 52 career meetings, but none was more decisive than a 45-7 rout on Friday night.

Last week’s ranking – 9

Friday’s Game – home vs. Rosman

9. Pisgah (4-2)

The Bears enjoyed a week off between a tough non-conference schedule and the start of play in a very competitive Mountain Six Conference.

Last week’s ranking – 10

Friday’s game – home vs. Smoky Mountain

10. Asheville (4-3, 4-0)

Impressive turnaround for the Cougars, who have bounced back from a 0-3 start to win four straight and settle into a familiar place – tied for first place with Reynolds in the Western Mountain Athletic Conference.

Last week’s ranking – Unranked

Friday’s Game – home vs. Tuscola

In this week: Asheville High. Out: West Henderson.
