The Murphy Bulldogs have been the mountains' hardware leader.

The football team has won two of the last three 1A state titles, and has a Hall of Fame coach who could add to the haul this year.

David Gentry has won 406 games in his storied career, and is seven wins away from becoming the all-time leader in wins for the state of North Carolina. .

Gentry has won eight of the school's nine state championships as well.

This year Murphy, although young, has the makings of another title contender.

The Bulldogs have five starters back on offense and defense, but have to replace their quarterback and top running back.

The strength of this team will be their offensive line, which is led by Junior all-state tackle Yousef Mugharbil. The 6-5, 300-pounder has college scouts from all over the country drooling, and has had offers from various Power 5 schools.

Murphy starts its season at home against Pisgah on August 23.
