The Murphy Bulldogs put on a show in the first game of the prep football season. The defending 1A state champs opened the Thursday Night Lights schedule on MY 40 with a resounding 30-13 win over Pisgah at E.J. Whitmire Stadium in Cullowhee.
The tone was set in the first series. The Black Bears drove to the Bulldogs half yard line but on 4th and goal Murphy linebacker Collin Cruse broke through the Pisgah offensive line to force a quick throw from Tanner Wike who was unable to connect with a wide open Justin Davis. The drive was over and Murphy legendary coach David Gentry said, "we got out of there and it kind of turned the whole game around."
The Murphy offense took over after that. They drove down the field a little later in the first quarter capping off a drive on Slade McTaggart's 7-yard touchdown run to make it 6-0 with the point after no good.
The Bulldogs excellent quarterback Joey Curry found a wide open Travis Seabolt for a 22-yard touchdown in the second quarter as Murphy led 12-0 at the half. On the second play of the 3rd quarter, Curry hit Hagan Newton on a 64-yard touchdown strike to make it 18-0. He added another touchdown on an 18-yard run to make it 24-0.
Pisgah scored on a Wike to Davis 45 yard pass to cut the Murphy lead to 24-6. The Bulldogs and Bears then exchanged 4th quarter touchdown runs, Murphy's Kadrian McRae scored from 4 yards out and Pisgah answered late on Eric Robinson's 4-yard touchdown run.
Murphy plays at Franklin next week while Pisgah hosts Enka. The next Thursday Night Lights game set for August 24--Erwin at Mountain Heritage. Pregame at 6:30, kickoff at 7 on MY 40.
