Mountain community members will be gathering in Asheville for a rally in support of Medicare for All on Saturday, Dec. 12, at 6:30 p.m.
The "bill burn" rally, organized by the Asheville Democratic Socialists of America, will be held at West Asheville Park, and its intent is also to "denounce the corporate control of our current healthcare system," according to a statement by the Asheville DSA.
Attendees will have the chance to share stories about interacting with the current healthcare system, followed by a symbolic act of throwing receipts, bills, claims denials and other documents into small fires at the park’s grills.
Masks and COVID-19-safe protocols will be in place and expected of all attendees.
“Asheville’s workers have been devastated by the pandemic. But even before, our town’s servers, bartenders, and musicians, our part-time care workers and gig-economy drivers -- few of them were able to afford medical care. There’s no going back to ‘normal.’ We need to put people ahead of profits and get Medicare For All," said Asheville DSA Co-Chair Andy Paul.
The Asheville rally is one of three "bill burn" events that the N.C. Medicare for All coalition (NCM4A) has organized throughout the state. The coalition held a press conference on Dec. 10 on Human Rights Day in Raleigh to demand that healthcare be treated as a universal human right by Congress and the incoming White House administration
The United States spends more per capita on health care than anywhere else in the world, and yet it has some of the worst health outcomes of every developed nation, according to a statement by Asheville DSA.
Millions of Americans are uninsured and even more are underinsured, leaving many unable to afford to see a doctor or otherwise use the benefits of their private healthcare plans, and the pandemic has made this issue even more pronounced as millions of Americans have become unemployed and therefore uninsured.
According to NCM4A, Medicare For All would eliminate health care costs at the point of service, as well as premiums and deductibles, by replacing private insurance with a single public payer nationwide. It includes all residents, regardless of citizenship status. Contrary to industry propaganda, working and middle class individuals and families would see their net costs decrease and care improve.
