New wording is suggested for the Civil War statue in Sylva known as 'Sylva Sam.' Jackson County commissioners suggest the following:

This monument was erected by the citizens of Jackson County in memory of those who died during the American Civil War originally dedicated on September 18, 1915, rededicated on May 11, 1996 to honor Jackson County veterans of all wars.

"E Pluribus Unum" is also proposed.

The wording would cover a depiction of the Confederate flag, and the words, "Our heroes of the Confederacy" at the base of the statue. The county will explore the cost of making the change.

No word yet when the Board of Commissioners will meet to consider approval.
