Officials say fuel spill contained, clean up continues along Catawba River

Cleanup crews remain on the scene of a hydraulic fluid spill along the Catawba River in Marion but say the spill has been contained.

The spill was reported on Thursday, July 22, shortly after a fire at Columbia Forest Products.

CREWS WORK TO CONTAIN HYDRAULIC FLUID SPILL ALONG CATAWBA RIVER IN MCDOWELL COUNTY

Officials say the fluid spilled into the Catawba River from Columbia Carolina Road to Resisoflex Road. Multiple agencies responded to the incident including PG Fire Department, McDowell County Emergency Management, McDowell Rescue, McDowell EMS, McDowell Fire & Rescue Association, NC Emergency Management and NCDWR.

Emergency personnel turned the scene over to a private cleanup contractor on Thursday night around 10 p.m. after the spill was contained.

Officials say citizens can expect to see cleanup crews working in the affected area until the cleanup is complete.
