One local group is not letting COVID-19 get in the way of an essential service: providing meals for those in need.
Three days a week, members of the Haywood Street Congregation in Asheville serve food. Because of the pandemic, the set-up looks a little different now.
Volunteers say they'd normally offer meals inside, but have now moved outdoors to make it safer for everyone.
Organizers say even though times are not normal right now, the mission of the church hasn’t changed.
"At Haywood Street our theme is relationships above all else and that’s what we’re trying to do, and it’s a beautiful thing," Steve Noblitt said.
About 400 people were fed on Sunday. Organizers say some 15 hundred meals are provided every week.
