The pandemic is taking a toll on all types of businesses, including at least one banking institution.
A viewer named Sharon reached out to Ask 13 after visiting the Wells Fargo branch on Merrimon Avenue earlier this month, to find that it was closed.
"Looked at the website and it said downtown and Merrimon temporarily closed. Wonder what is going on?" she wrote to Ask 13.
Wells Fargo corporate spokesperson Josh Dunn said the Merrimon Avenue branch recently closed because someone tested positive for COVID-19, but that location has reopened.
However, the locations in downtown Asheville and West Asheville are closed for other reasons, and the West Asheville branch will be closing permanently.
"There were no positive COVID tests at either branch, but our resources are limited due to the pandemic," Dunn said. "Main is closed temporarily, but we will be permanently closing the Asheville West branch on May 5."
Other Wells Fargo branches in the Asheville area are open, some with modified services like drive-up only or meeting with a banker by appointment only, News 13 confirmed.
A date for reopening the downtown Asheville branch has not been announced.
Customers can check Wells Fargo’s branch locator for the status of branches and they are also encouraged to consider using the online, mobile and phone banking options.
