Pregame set for 7pm, kickoff at 7:30pm
Two Upstate S.C. teams who need a victory square off in this week’s edition of Friday Night Rivals on MY 40.
Clinton (1-4) travels to Union (2-3) in a AAA Region 3 matchup that will be televised beginning at 7 p.m. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
Clinton has struggled on both sides of the ball, allowing 34 or more points in four of five games and managing just 14 points or less in four of five outings.
The exception was a 47-0 rout of Powdersville in the third game of the season.
The Red Devils opened the season with losses to Laurens (34-14) and Broome (42-7). They have dropped games 45-0 to Wren and 39-6 to Pendleton in their last two outings.
Union has shown some promise offensively, averaging 26 points a game. But the Yellow Jackets’ defense has been leaky, giving up an average of more than 32 points a game.
The Yellow Jackets’ offense has been paced by the strong running of Tykevues Kershaw and Kesean Glover.
Union has been on a lose-one, win-one cycle this season, opening with a 58-40 loss to Chapman. After defeating Flora 35-14, the Yellow Jackets dropped a 34-7 decision to Gaffney.
A 41-14 win at Broome was followed by a 42-7 loss at Greer.
Since winning a state title in 2009, Clinton has not had much success, with seven straight losing seasons heading into this year.
Union is coming off a 2-10 season after going 9-5 in 2016.
This is the AAA Region 3 opener for both teams. Woodruff (4-1) is the only team in the six-school league that got through non-region play with a winning record.
